Definition
A video game “franchise” is a series of games that are related in any of several ways:
- Being direct plot sequels or prequels
- Featuring the same character(s)
- Exploring the same game mechanics
- Being created by the same developer
Games within a franchise usually include the same main title. Individual games may be identified as separate using sequel numbers (e.g. Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2), years (Madden NFL 2008 and Madden NFL 2009), or subtitles.
