Overview and common mechanics

Platform games, also called "platformers," are a subgenre of action game in which the primary game mechanic is navigating the environment by running and jumping. These games are usually played in two-dimensional perspective, and are frequently also called sidescrollers because of the way that the screen moves to follow the action.

History and examples

Platform games were extremely popular in the 1980s, but became less common as technology and tastes evolved. Super Mario Bros. is an example of a classic platform game. Elements of the platform game genre are present in many modern games from other genres, including those played from the first person perspective.

Traditional platform games have remained popular in sections of the gaming landscape where cutting-edge technology does not generally predominate or drive sales. Examples include handheld gaming devices and browser-based technologies like Adobe Flash.
