Achievements are a way of tracking and rewarding player behavior within a game. Achievement systems designate meta-goals within the game, and reward players with points for reaching these goals. A simple example of such a goal would be "finish the game within 2 hours." Most achievement systems do not allow players to redeem achievement points for real-world or virtual goods—they are a form of bragging rights.

Similar systems exist on numerous technological platforms, including the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows PC and some web-based Flash game sites. World of Warcraft, the popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game, has an achievement system as well. Many single-player games have begun to include similar systems. The word "achievements" was first used in this way by Microsoft, who introduced their version of the system when they launched the Xbox 360 console in 2005. On Sony's competing PlayStation 3 console, the system is known as "Trophies."
